Rainbow Banded Australian Boulder Opal Heart Charm, 14k Gold

Every time I tilt this heart under the light, a different band of color wakes up first. Electric blue and green run straight across the top, then reds, oranges and little flashes of violet glow underneath, and as it moves on a chain the bands take turns, so it never looks quite the same twice.

Boulder opal grows in thin seams inside ironstone boulders in the Queensland outback, so the color in each one forms its own pattern, and that is why none of these hearts look anything alike. This one is carved into a heart with the bands running across the face like a horizon.

I set it in solid 14k gold with four claw prongs that hold it close while leaving the whole face open to the light, and hung it from a generous 6mm bail so it slides onto a chain you already love, or onto my 14k baby anchor chain the way you see it here.
